After doing some thinking, I think we jumped to conclusions yesterday about Klance being “dead” WAY too quickly. Let me sum up why:
1. We keep forgetting the term “End-game romance.” As in a pair that will end off the show together. I feel like every time we watch a season, we expect to see something happen immediately rather than wait for realistic progression and development.
- Lance likes Allura a lot. This crush has been developing since s1, it’s been established and recently he’s gotten even more serious about it. But something else major was brought up in s1 that we’re seeming to forget as well, and I think it will be very important next season. That being Lance’s homesickness. It was also emphasised in s5 how much he misses his family, to the point where he started crying over them. Initially I believed that Lotor would be the one that would be the reason why Lance and Allura wouldn’t end off the show together, but it’s going to run deeper than that. This is something that actually impacts Lance’s character.
- Allura knows how strong Lance’s feelings are for her after the mice confessed. Except she still has not confronted it, most likely because she’s still recovering from what happened between her and Lotor, but the other possibility is that she just doesn’t feel the same way. If she does possibly develop feelings and their relationship becomes mutual, it won’t last long. Why? Because once they reach Earth and she sees how much Lance loves being there/how much he’s missed it, she’s not going to want to take him away from that. This visit probably won’t last forever, and they’ll have to resume their fights in space against the Galra. But once the whole mission is complete, they’re most likely going to return back to Earth because they no longer need to be out there fighting as Voltron. By most likely, I think Lance will be the one who feels most obligated to return or stay since his story line revolves around his homesickness. Allura’s home is not Earth, but Altea. It does not make sense for her to go back with Lance or stay with him either. They can’t end off the show together. That’s why they’ll probably let each other go before the time comes. Also Lance’s end game is supposed to be someone he needs, not wants like the writers have mentioned. He’s wanted Allura since s1, but like this season showed, his crush on her has always been unrequited. He needs someone who’s self assured too. Keith has grown physically and mentally two years, didn’t even hesitate to pilot the black lion to help the team like before, is a lot more confident after what he went through with the BOM, and he knows about his past too? That means a lot.
2. Keith has not been on the team since s4, meaning he has not been able to have any proper interactions with anyone personally. That being except for Shiro because they are the closest on the team, and it made the most sense for him to be the one to take down Kuron. But as highlighted many times in this season especially, their relationship is purely familial. When he came back, it was in the middle of having to expose Lotor for what he’s been doing to the Alteans. There was no time for anything else to happen, everything was so fast-paced, that’s why he literally brushed off Lance when he tried to approach him. This season was a lot more about the actual story. It had a lot to do with conclusions, questions being answered, and a few loose ends being tied up. We discovered Lotor’s true side and he was defeated. They managed to get back the real Shiro and he’s doing okay now. It’s also when Lance and Allura’s arc is starting to pick up a bit, but as I emphasised before, it will not last forever.
- Lauren and Joaquim recently admitted to using a few of the same aspects of their older shows on the story line in Voltron. By saying they’d started off Lotor’s arc to be kind of like Zukko’s, but by the end he went full blown Azula by betraying the team and going crazy. So I have proof to believe, they are using a few of the same aspects on Lance, Allura, and Keith. In this situation, Lance is Korra, Asami is Keith, and Allura is Makko. In LOK, the love triangle was more established. There isn’t a love triangle between Lance, Allura, and Keith, but like they did with Makko/Korra/Asami all three have been involved with each other in some way almost to throw the viewer off. Remember s2 with Allura and Keith? They set up their storyline to seem as if it was going to go in a romantic direction, with the hugging, that one scene where they were floating in space together, and even her falling into his arms. They incorporated all of that into Allura accepting Keith for being Galra, that was their little arc. But in the end, whatever they were building between them went nowhere. Now they’re doing the same thing with Lance and Allura, obviously it’s more serious because Lance actually has feelings for Allura, but I feel like she views him in the same way as Keith. It’s not meant to be romantic, they just have a close relationship because they’re apart of a team and are a family.
- There was an obvious friendship and dynamic between Korra and Asami that was prevalent throughout the show, people most likely shipped them but they probably didn’t think too much about their canon relationship because of the love triangles going on around them. That’s what Keith and Lance have. It’s obviously not exactly the same because they aren’t the same show. But those same parallels and dynamics are interpreted, red and blue? Soft scenes with bi flag colour symbolism? Also if I’m correct, just like Keith and Lance, Korra and Asami did not like each other too much when they first met either
- Jeremy spoiled the Earth reunion and Lance dying, those both happened. So I don’t think he’s lying when he says we’ll be happy about LGBT rep and that something might happen between two characters. He wouldn’t lie about something like that, it makes no sense to. One of the writers of the show said “No comment” when asked about LGBT rep. I saw people were a bit mad about this, wondering why he didn’t just flat-out say no if there wasn’t any? Probably because there is and him saying no would just shut down any hope or belief which again, makes no sense to do. Keith and Lance’s development in s3 wasn’t for nothing, Lauren didn’t call Lance Keith’s stability for nothing, these romantically coded parallels aren’t for nothing, their bonding moment in general was not for nothing, this?? Wasn’t for nothing
Everything is intentional. The show is not over yet, there’s still so much that could happen. Look how much we got just this season in just seven episodes. We still have 26 more left. I think instead of jumping to conclusions, we need to just chill and watch what unfolds. This season was about endings, things came to a close. Next season will have new beginnings, more will develop. We just need to let the story tell itself.

IM SO FRICKIN HYPED!!… and scared 😂

I have no doubt that the season that Greg Weisman promised us would be an amalgamation of the amazing aspects of season 1 and 2 will be extraordinary. With all the twisting plot developments and new characters, there’s a lot to look forward to, but that’s also kind of my concern. There’s so many new characters. How can each character possibly be developed well in depth like the show has done when there is such a large cast? I really hope they find a way to make the largest cast of superheroes that I’ve ever seen work, but also make the character moments and growth that I adore shine through.

But also how on earth are they going to cram all this change into 26 episodes? If the time jump wasn’t enough with changing that positions of the characters around, what about the previous characters that we’ve gotten to know so well? I know that it might seem like they have done all the developing they need to go through, but I feel that It might not totally feel like the same show if what used to be the main cast is put in the background. Honestly though, despite all my worries I’m sure the moment I sit down to watch it I’ll be absolutely brimming with excitement. I think this post was a long and convulsed way of me saying that I want to see Wally come back and then have a super cheesy and sappy reunion with Artemis and the rest of the original team members. BUT WE’LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS. How can I be so excited and nervous for something at the same time?
